The ETIS Information Security Working Group (ISWG) gathered in Helsinki for its first meeting of the year at the end of January. The event was kindly hosted by Ericsson and featured two packed days full of productive discussions on the most recent security matters. Some 24 representatives from the following companies participated: Proximus, BICS, Telenor Norway, KPN, TDC, Swisscom, Telia Company, Telia Estonia, British Telecom, Orange, Vodafone Germany, Turk Telecom, Lattelecom, Ericsson, Oracle, Open Xchange as well as our partnering organisations TNO and ITU.
As always, the main objective was to share knowledge and to discuss the most recent challenges in the information security environment. During the first day, our agenda focused on key questions and struggles regarding cloud monitoring and an extensive debate on cyber security risks. The security in suppliers’ contracts framework was presented as well as approaches to security governance, security risk management and control selection. The last session was dedicated to traditional Telco-only discussions.
Day two was kicked off with an interesting multi-perspective session on Blockchain, which was followed by a session on the protection of critical infrastructure. Here the group discussed the differences in national legislation, employee security clearance requirements and internal company policies in terms of access to infrastructure. Security testing in development was again a hot topic as companies still face many challenges in this area.
The Telco Security Roadmap, created in 2015 in cooperation with TNO, was reviewed. This is a periodic exercise where Members have an opportunity to identify both short and long-term threats and opportunities as well as rank the overall impact on their companies. These are then reflected on a graphic “horizon” and serve as a guidance for future focus of the group’s discussion.
Our ISWG meeting was wrapped up by an update on the European Telco Security Benchmark that has, over the 10 years of its existence, become an important tangible asset for the group.
