The ETIS Community Gathering 2018 came to a close last Friday, October 19 after a successful 2 days of joint- and individual working group meetings focused on Telcos "Leading in the Age of Digital Disruption and AI."

Many thanks to Diamond sponsor Huawei, Gold Sponsors Comarch and Ericsson, Bronze Sponsor Altice Portugal as well as host NOS and local partners Beta-I, Start-up Lisboa, and Portugal Ventures, whose support ensured its success!

Over 215 participants joined this year's Gathering to discuss current trends, emerging technologies and challenges as well as share best practices and use-cases with their peers from across Europe. Before breaking out into working group meetings, the Gathering was kicked off by the Common Session, which featured speeches by ETIS Managing Director Wim De Meyer, Malcolm Frank (Chief Strategic Officer at Cognizant), Risto Siilasmaa (Chairman of Nokia), as well as Luís Alveirinho (Chief Technology Officer at bronze sponsor Altice Portugal).

In his welcome remarks, ETIS Managing Director Wim De Meyer discussed the "why" (purpose), "how" (process) and "what" (result) of ETIS, elaborating on our current direction and priorities. Special emphasis was placed on the development of a new B2B working group as well as the production of tangible outputs such as the Digital Billing and Payments Manifesto, "The big (customer-) friendly giant: How Telcos will regain customer trust and promote transparency through digitalization."

This was next followed by a few words on the overall conference focuses on:

  • where the digital transformation journey can take you as a telco;
  • where Telcos have the competitive advantage; and
  • what will be the impact of artificial intelligence.

Luís Alveirinho, Chief Technology Officer of bronze sponsor Altice Portugal, then made a few welcome words where he discussed how Portugal is European leader with Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH).

Next the first of the Gathering's two inspiring keynote speakers, Malcolm Frank (Chief Strategy Officer at Cognizant) gave remarks on "Artificial intelligence and you: The future of your work." He discussed how AI is changing industries at large and in particular the telecommunications sector. And the fact that it’s not all doom and gloom! 75% of jobs will be protected and enhanced by AI and thinking "AHEAD" - Automate, Halo (Digital Twin), Enhance, Abundance, and Discovery - will help you get ahead.

This was followed by the second keynote speaker, Nokia Chairman Risto Siilasmaa, who elaborated on what machine learning truly means, why its important and topical as well as how your organization can be better prepared to use it.

The rest of the two days comprised of networking opportunities and individual working group meetings, which included a number of joint-sessions on areas such as "Quantum computing" (a joint-session of the Information Security Working Group and Anti-Abuse Telco Network); "Opportunities for the use of profiling" (a joint-session of the Big Data working group and the Data Privacy Task Force); as well as the "Future of innovation and AI" (a joint-session of the Digital Telco Strategy Forum, Big Data Working Group and Innovation Working Group.) Participants also came together from various working groups for the Start-up pitch session and presentation of the TeBIT results by partner Boston Consulting Group, which included a deep dive on Digital Transformation KPIs.
