A new ecosystem for financial operations – Telcos entering the sphere of finance

Members of ETIS’ Innovation Working Group and Digital Telco Strategy Forum met in Rotterdam on June 7-8, 2018 for a discussion and workshop on “Opportunities for Telcos in the Sphere of Finance.” Many thanks to KPN for kindly hosting this event and arranging tours of their Innovation Headquarters as well as RDM Makerspace, an IoT academy they co-founded in Rotterdam.
The meeting was kicked off by a presentation of Deutsche Telekom’s views on PSD2 and how it impacts telcos. This was followed by several speakers from the fintech sector—including B-HIVE, Belgian Mobile ID and UnifiedPost—who shared their experiences in the payments industry, digital ID for private persons and corporations as well as on fintech trends in general.
During the break, members took a short water-taxi trip to RDM Makerspace, where Jurjen Lengkeek, founder and manager of the IoT Academy, gave a tour of the facilities and products, which included autonomous water taxis using 5G, algorithm designed roofing as well as workshops on LoRa-IoT. He explained how they offer workshops and educational modules, support IoT developers and initiate collaborations.
The second half of the day, moderated by Raitis Linde from Lattelecom, was kicked off by a workshop where professionals from telcos and fintech applied the Triangulation Method to identify opportunities and distill interesting use-cases. The day was concluded with a networking dinner at the historic New York Hotel were members had a chance to further discuss their approaches and ideas.
On the second day, the ETIS Innovation working group continued with the ideas generated on day one and used the value proposition canvas to analyze selected use-cases. This innovative workshop was concluded with preparing the blueprints for pursuing the selected specific opportunities such as a Centralized ID and Data Transparency platform, payment processing infrastructure and ecosystem for financial operations.
After lunch, the participants visited KPN Innovation Headquarters were Marie José Van Den Boomgaard shared their views and innovation strategy. The discussion was followed by the presentation of Tom Rijks, who expanded on the digital ID and transactions business at KPN. It was followed by a discussion on the specific collaboration models with opportunities for all the participants.
At the end of two days, members of the ETIS Innovation WG went home with new contacts, ideas and concrete blueprints for the next innovation step at their respective telcos.
