The ETIS Big Data Working Group gathered from April 19 to 20 for their first meeting of the year to discuss the opportunities and challenges of Big Data within their telcos. Many thanks to Oracle for kindly hosting us at their offices in Utrecht.

The event was kicked off with a tour of Oracle's offices. During the meeting experts from nine European telcos presented Machine Learning use cases at their companies and discussed them among their peers. Presentations included facial recognition and machine learning at stores, monitoring TV data in real time, product recommendation engine, network anomaly detection, voice transcription, music recommendation engine and others. The second session of the day was dedicated to Data Lakes, their architectures and differences between them as well as the business value behind them.

The meeting resumed on day 2 with participant input on the knowledge sharing within their telcos and the changes it brings. The use cases included masters educational programs, scaled agile framework, how knowledge is shared between teams, departments and business units as well as the tools used. One member explained the Fail Board concept their company uses. In order to make the credo “Fail Forward” a reality, employees post their failures publicly so everybody can learn from their mistakes. No need for covering them up. Another member proposed to join a Big data project with Eurostat for which a clear interest was shown by participants in the meeting. The second part of the day was dedicated to data privacy, anonymisation methodologies, consent management and data governance. The discussions included not just the technical architecture set-ups, but also the practical applications and use cases. There was also a lot of interest and discussions about GDPR and the steps taken by ETIS members to be fully compliant.
