The first ETIS CERT-SOC meeting of 2018 was hosted by Turk Telecom in Istanbul from March 15th - 16th.
These meetings bring together CERT and SOC specialists from ETIS Member organizations in order to improve the overall security of the telecommunications infrastructure through active exchange of information, intelligence and experiences, and sharing of knowledge in the areas of cyber intelligence and security. Traditionally, they are kicked off by an interactive round of company updates that provide space for each participant to share their companies' successes, struggles and challenges. The short presentations are usually followed by a lively discussion and active sharing of opinions, experiences and use cases.
The key discussion topics this time included monitoring, detection, vulnerability management, prevention, threat intelligence, logging, automation of processes, management systems, security governance, SIEM, read-teaming and GDPR.
The remaining part of the agenda focused on a deep-dive of a selection of the already mentioned topics, of which threat hunting was a priority. Enhancing capabilities remains an everlasting story and thus several presentations provided a variety of views on the structure, function, responsibilities and maturity of their respective CERT and SOC teams.
A number of recent incidents were also examined in more detail and their lessons learned were shared and discussed. Moreover, the demo of the incident responders’ toolkit was universally found to be a highlight of the meeting.
