As the end of the year is fast approaching, we would like to take this opportunity to present a short re-cap of 2015 and thank the ETIS Members for all the dedication, hard work and contributions that made 2015 such a great success. This year, ETIS has held close to 20 Working Group meetings, workshops and countless conference calls without forgetting our annual ETIS Community Gathering hosted in Copenhagen. We are very fortunate to have members who are willing to go to great lengths to be able to attend ETIS meetings even in times of strict travel restrictions. This has positively reflected on our attendance levels, demonstrating that what we do brings value and is worth the effort and time you all put into ETIS.

Wim De Meyer, ETIS Chairman, had the following to say about our Members’ outlook for the future. “During 2015, it was refreshing to witness our Members not only focusing on a cost-cutting mentality but to evolve also towards a more positive growth and innovation outlook. Innovation was the main topic of discussion during the Copenhagen Gathering and our Members discussed various innovation and collaboration models. The latest findings of our annual IT Benchmarking study (TeBIT) also supports this and it is mirrored in our latest ETIS activities which have a spotlight on digital transformation and digital services. ETIS is one of the few trusted platforms where Telcos can openly exchange knowledge and best practices in a non-competitive environment.” To learn more about IT costs and spending patterns in Telcos, please download our TeBIT 2015 Executive Report, which was produced in co-operation with BCG.

This year we have seen that Information Security still remains at the top of the Telco agenda with three out of ten Working Groups dedicated to Telco security related issues. Earlier this year, the CERT-SOC group launched a landmark project to automate the sharing of cyber threat intelligence. This project is a first for the Telco industry and six of our Members are already actively sharing vital threat intelligence via this platform with more planned to join shortly. ETIS also organised a unique 3-day Reverse Engineering and Router Forensics Training in Amsterdam, kindly supported by KPN. ENISA also asked ETIS to help them create realistic, Telco specific cyber threat scenarios so that they can design realistic European wide cyber exercises.

Billing, Business Intelligence (and Big Data) and Digital Sales & Services are also riding high on the Telco agenda. All three groups conducted a record number of surveys and benchmarks which is one of the best ways for our members to exchange knowledge, identify best practices and learn from one another. What makes these activities unique is that they are purpose built by the Telcos, for the Telcos and the ETIS Community provides the vital trust required to run such projects. More details on the Working Groups can be found in this year’s ETIS Annual Report.

On the member front, ETIS currently has 30 Telco Members and we are pleased to announce that NOS (Portugal) and Manx Telecom (Isle of Man) joined ETIS as Members earlier this year. La Poste (France) also recently joined the ETIS Anti-Abuse Telco Network. Lithium became part of the ETIS Community as an Associate Member and is active in the Digital Sales & Services WG. We are also delighted to announce the very recent partnership with the Internet Society of China.

Last but not least, Tora Tenden, Secretary General for ETIS has decided to retire and will be pursuing other opportunities. Tora became ETIS Chairman in 2002, a function she held up to 2013 when she took the position of Secretary General. ETIS would like to thank Tora for her work over the years that helped to shape the organisation and its culture of 'sharing knowledge'. “After working with Tora for more than 20 years and the last 12 years in ETIS, this new situation will be strange for me. We will miss her engagement and her good humour, always trying to connect people to share knowledge as the Slogan of ETIS is saying. Please join me in wishing Tora the very best in her future endeavours.” ETIS Managing Director, Terje Tondel.

ETIS will continue to serve its members and is moving forward towards a renewed strategy with further alignment to the challenges that are facing operators. We want ETIS to be seen as a competent organisation that is attractive to all Telcos. We want to ensure that ETIS sets and drives the strategic agenda in the Telco space based on information sharing and from there leading to collaboration where possible. It is our goal that the value of the ETIS membership is significant to all the members. To reach this ambition we need to build upon the current momentum and further enhance the professionalism of the organisation.

On behalf of everyone in the ETIS Central Office, we wish you all a happy and relaxing holiday season. We are looking forward to meeting all of you soon in 2016 and all of our Working Group meetings are already in place as can be seen on the ETIS calendar . Sharing knowledge is our strength!
