ETIS members to gather to discuss cyber security

Wednesday 22 January 2014   (0 Comments)

Last week, on the 14th and 15th of January, the ETIS Information Security working group held its first meeting of the year in a very memorable location – Dubai – where the group was kindly hosted by Oger Telecom. This meeting was very well attended with close to 40 people representing a great mix of companies ranging from telecommunications operators, network equipment vendors as well as software security and handset makers. The list included Avea, Belgacom, BT, KPN, MTN, Oger Telecom, Swisscom, TDC, Telenor, Turkcell, Turk Telekom, Vimpelcom, Vodafone, Cloudmark, Ericsson, Praesidium, Oracle, TNO, Alcatel Lucent, Blackberry, Huawei, Secunia and Symantec.

The goal of the meeting was to discuss how current challenges, opportunities, strategies and business drivers are influencing the Information Security environment. Some of the specific topics covered during the meeting included: latest Information Security strategies, experiences with cyber security incidents, espionage, and national cyber security exercises. The group also discussed security in outsourcing and development of projects and products, potential areas of co-operation between the Telcos and network vendors and,  last but not least, vulnerability and threat sharing between ETIS member companies.

The usual two-day meeting was then followed by a Regional Cyber Security Workshop on the 16th of January kindly chaired by Aernout Reymer from BT and supported by Ericsson as the Gold Sponsor and Huawei and Secunia as Silver Sponsors. The Workshop brought together a number of prolific speakers such as Mikko Hypponen from F-Secure Labs, Martin Brown from BT, Jaya Baloo from KPN and Ronald Prins from Fox-IT who focused on the role of governments as attackers in the cyber space and the future of cyber security in general. Their presentations triggered interesting and productive discussions, which were conducted in a open and sharing environment.

The next meeting of the Information Security Working Group will take place on 19-20 June in Zurich kindly hosted by Swisscom and will be preceded by the ETIS Security Benchmark 2014 Workshop (18 June).
