Last week the ETIS CERT-SOC Telco Network held its first meeting of 2014 in Bratislava, Slovakia kindly hosted by Slovak Telekom. The meeting was attended by 21 participants from 13 companies including A1 Telekom Austria, Belgacom, BT, Croatian Telekom, Deutsche Telekom, KPN, Magyar Telekom, Oger Telecom, Slovak Telekom, Swisscom, TDC, Telecom Italia, T-mobile Poland and TNO.

The main goal of the meeting was to bring together CERT and SOC specialists from ETIS member organizations in order improve the overall security of the telecommunications infrastructure through exchange of information, intelligence and experiences, and sharing of knowledge in the areas of cyber intelligence and security. Summarising the successful meeting, Diogenes Santos De Jesus from our host Slovak Telekom commented: “It was a pleasure to host the ETIS CERT-SOC Telco Network meeting in Bratislava. The group is a relevant platform for information sharing and interaction with security experts from major European Telecommunication operators. The Technology Security Department of Slovak Telekom is glad to be part of the working group as it provides us the opportunity to keep track of the latest security strategies within the telecommunication sector."

During the first day, the meeting focused on latest organizational activities including the motivations and set-up of Cyber Defense Centers, Incident Response Organisation and automating and optimizing intelligence-sharing between ETIS members.  On the second day, the group discussed and shared knowledge on more operational and technical topics including responses to vulnerabilities like Heartbleed, dealing with protocol abuse and building up cyber intelligence capabilities. Participants also exchanged the latest information on tooling, interesting case studies and using DNS as a detection tool.

The ETIS CERT-SOC group also agreed to prepare a half-day Workshop on SIEM Use Cases (June 30, 2014), which will be kindly hosted by Belgacom and hold a 2nd group meeting on 6-7 November 2014 (location and host TBD).
